Hyperbilirubinemia Flashcards
The term “hemolytic” is Latin for
“destruction”
when there is excessive destruction of red blood cells
Hemolytic Disease
In Rh incompatibility, how many hours after birth before the parent will form antibodies?
First 72 hours after birth.
This will halt the process of antibody formation causing sensitization to not occur in RH incompatibility.
RHIG; RhoGAM; Rho immune globulin
Normal cord blood has a total serum bilirubin of
level 0 to 3 mg per 100 mL
Bilirubin level becomes dangerous if the level rises above
20 mg per dL
In preterm infant, bilirubin level becomes dangerous if the level is as low as
12 mg per dL
Bilirubin levels in blood may be measured either by
a blood draw or holding a transcutaneous meter against the infant’s skin.
These are necessary measures that help reduce bilirubin levels in an infant affected by blood incompatibility.
*early feeding
*phototherapy
*exchange transfusion
fat-soluble bilirubin
Indirect Bilirubin
water-soluble Bilirubin
Direct Bilirubin
newborns are generally schedules for phototherapy when the TsB level rises to
10 to 12 mg per dL at 24 hours of age
The stools of a neonate under bilirubin lights are often _______ because of the excessive bilirubin being excreted as the result of the therapy
bright green
The type of blood used for transfusion is
O Rh-negative blood
When exchange transfusion is used as a therapy for blood incompatibility, it removes approximately
85% of sensitized blood cells.
