Cerebral Palsy Flashcards
is a group of nonprogressive disorders of upper motor neuron impairment that result in motor dysfunction
Cerebral Palsy (CP)
is the most common motor disability of childhood
Cerebral Palsy
Cerebral Palsy is caused by
abnormal brain development or damage to the developing brain, leading to cell destruction of the motor tracts
Four main types of Cerebral Palsy:
*pyramidal or spastic type
*extrapyramidal type (dyskinetic or athetoid type)
*ataxic
*mixed
is excessive tone in the voluntary muscles that results from lose of upper motor neurons.
Spastic type or spasticity
A child with spastic CP has
*hypertonic muscles
*abnormal clonus
*positive babinski reflex
*tonic neck reflex
If infants with CP are held in a ventral suspension position
they arch their backs and extend their arms and legs abnormally
Spastic involvement may have:
*hemiplegia
*quadriplegia
*diplegia or paraplegia
may affect both extremities on one side, what is it called?
Hemiplegia
may affect all four extremities, what is it called?
quadriplegia
may affect primarily the lower extremities
Diplegia or paraplegia
Athetoid means
“wormlike”
The athetoid type of CP involves
abnormal involuntary movement
the early life of athetoid type of CP, the child appears
limp and flaccid
Have an awkward wide-based gait
Ataxic type
