wall of the hut
jim doesn’t have a
coat of arms
jim thinks a coat of arms is an actual
piece of clothing

tom comes up with a
coat of arms for Jim
tom doesn’t even know what half of the things that he wants to put on
the coat of arms are
Tom writes down mournful inscriptions for
Jim
tom wants jim to write all four of the inscriptions on the wall of the hut but obviously
jim can’t do this
tom says that he’ll
block the letters
tom says that they need a rock to write inscriptions because the
log walls won’t do
jim says that the rock will be harder but tom says that huck
can help
huck and jim were having a hard time writing the inscriptions and tom says that they
need grindstone
as they are trying to bring the grindstone to the hut they
give up
jim slips the chain off his bed and wraps the chain around his neck and he goes with Huck and Tom to
get the grindstone
Tom superintends as jim and Huck
roll the stone
tom asks jim if he has any spiders and when Jim says no, Tom says that they’ll
get him some
jim exprsses that he doesn’t want spiders and that he’d rather have a rattlesnake and
tom takes him seriously
jim insists that he can’t deal with a rattlensake and and tom says that they can get him garter snakes instead and pretend that they’re
tattlesnakes
tom says that they’ll get jim some rats but jim says that he doesn’t
want any rats
tom insists that jim must have rats and says that jim has to play music for the rats on the
jews harp
tom tells jim to play
the last link is broken
tom tells jim to plant a mullen stalk and to
water it with his tears
jim complains about all the work he has to do as a prisoner and then tom starts complaining that he has to make a name for Jim and that
jim doesn’t appreciate it
jim apologizes and the boys
leave
