huck and tom go and dig about 4/5 feet along the middle of a log and according to Tom they were
right behind Jijm’s bed
no one would see the hole because the counterpin hung down,
covering the hole
tom says that digging is not gonna work because they’re
in a hurry

tom then say that they could dig jim out with picks and pretedn that the picsk are
case knives
huck states that he doesn’t care how he gets something done, so long as it gets
done
tom tries to climb up the lightning-rod, but his hands are too
sore
tom asks huck if he can think up a way for tom to get up and huck says that tom can take the stairs nd p
pretend it’s a lightning-rod
the next day, tom steals a pewter spoon and brass candlestick to make
jim’s pen
huck steals three
tin plates
they need to find a way to get the things to jim, and huck says that they could take them through the hole when it is
completed
at night, tom and huck pitch in one of the candles through the
window
they finish digging the hole and
enter the cabin
they light the candle and wkae jim up, jim is happy and showers the boys with terms of
endearment
jim wanted to cut the chain off his leg and leave right away, but Tom explains that this isn’t regular and explains the
plans
jim tells them that Silas comes in to
pray with him
jim says that aunt sally makes sure he’s
comfortable and isn’t hungry
tom says that they’ll send jim things through
silas and sally (huck doesn’t like this)
tom says that they would send in the rope ladder pie and other large items through
nat, jim’s slave
tom says that they will put little things in Silas’s coat pockets for jim to steal out and would tie things to
sally’s apron strings/ put them in her apron pocket
tom tells jim to keep a journal on the shirt with his
blood
jim doesn’t understand why any of these things are necessary and marks it down to
white people superioirty
tom is happy because he’s
having fun
tom wishes that they could continue this for the rest of their lives and leave Jim to their
children to get him out
huck and tom chop up the
brass candlistick
tom put a piece of candlestick in the middle of a corn pone on jim’s
pan
jimalmost breaks his teeth when he finds the candlestick but he pretends the brass piece is a
rock
jim always sticks his fork into his food before
biting into it now
hounds go into jim’s room throught the hole that went through the lean-to because the boys forgot to
close the lean-to door
nat thinks the hounds got in because of
witches
tom continues with the act and
coaxes nat
tom tells nat tha tthe witches are hungry and that he should make them a
witch pie
Nat states that he doesn’t know how to make a witch pie, so Tom says
he’ll do it
tom tells nat that he would have to turn around when jim unloads th epan, and that nat can’t handle the
withc-things
