Huck Finn Ch 34 Flashcards
tom thinks that jim is in the
hut by the ash-hopper
huck had seen a black man go in the hut with
food
the slave had gone into the hut and then came out and locked it and gave
silas a key during supper
according to tom, the watermelon that the slave was holding when he went into the hut indicates a
man
the key indicates a
prisoner
tom tells huck to think of a plan to stela Jim and that he would be
thinking of one too
huck wants Sawyer’s
cleverness and itnelligence
(Huck’s plan) find out if jim’s
in the canoe
(Huck’s plan) get up the canoe and the
raft
(Huck’s plan) on the first dark night, steal Silas’s key when he’s
asleep
(Huck’s plan) fetch Jim and shove off down the
river on the raft
tom wants to have more fun while breaking
jim out of the hut
tom comes up withplan and it has more
style than Huck’s
Huck’s confused as to why a respectable boy who has a family & reputation at stake, who is intelligent & kind, would make a
shame of himself by helping to save Jim
huck was going to warn tom about what he was doing, but Tom basically just says that he would
help and he will stay true to his word
huck and tom go the hut and find a square window that has
one board nailed across
huck suggests that jim escape through the window, but Tom wants
something more compicated than a window
huck suggests to cut out a hole with a saw for
jim to escape from
they find a lean-to and Tom suggests that they
dig Jim out since it would take longer
They return to the house and huck goes through the back door but Tom wants to
climb up
Tom and Huck befriend the slave that
tends to Jim
they talk to him about wool that he had to keep away
witches
tom then asks the slave if the vittles were for a
dog
the slave says yes and asks if tom wants to see him and tom says
yes
tom and huck go in the hut and find
jim
jim calsl the boys by name and the slave asks if
jim knows them
tom tricks the slave and says that jim doesn’t know thema nd asks the slave why he would think that
jim knows them
the slave says that Jim said something, but tom looks confused and pretends that it
didn’t happen
Tom asks Huck if he heard anything and Huck says that
nobody said anything
Tom asks Jim if he said anything but Jim
denies it
the slave now thinks that it’s the witches and he bets Tom not to
say anything
Tom gives the slave a dime and says that they wouldn’t tell anyone, telling the slave to buy more
thread to tie his wool with
tom whispers to jim that they’re going to
set him free
tom and huck say that they would come back if the slave wants them to and the slave said that he wants them to come back when its dark because that’s when the
witches come for him
