the duke and king began to discuss things in private which made
jim and huck uneasy
jim and huck assume tha t they were going to
break into someone’s property/ make counterfeit money
jim and huck decide that they wouldn’t be
involved in such activities
they get to a town called.. and the king goes to see if the people there heard of …
pikesville; the royal nonesuch
the duke and huck went to the village later in the day and when the duke and king begin to
argue, huck ran away
huck goes to the raft and calls for jim to
set it loose but jim isn’t there so huck cries
silas phelps apparently found jim and
took him
huck realizes that the duke and king sold jim back into slavery so that they could
get money
huck contemplated writing a letter to tom sawyer to vie miss watson so that
jim could at least be near his family, but he changed his mind
huck believes that jim being sold was a message of providence that what he was doing was
wrong
huck writes the letter to miss watson anyway and feels all
washed clean of sin
huck begins thinking of jim’s sacrifices and love and decides he’d
rather go to hell
huck wants to steal jim out of slavery again and possibly
do something worse if he could
the next morning huck puts on his clothes and goes down to where he thinks
phelps’s place is and sinks the canoe
by phelps’ sawmill huck sees the duke who is hanging up a bill for the
royal nonesuch
huck makes up a story and says that he wsaw that the raft and jim were gone and then the duke just says that the king made a trade and got
40 dollars
the duke expresses that he and the king thought that huck stole
their raft and shook them
the duke mentions that the king
sold jim
huck begins crying and complaining that Jim was his property and that he
needs to find him
the duke makes a deal with him and then says that if huck promises that he won’t blow the duke and king’s cover that the duke would tell huck where to
find jim
the duke lies and says that the man that bought jim was named
abram foster
the duke says foster lives in
lafayette
huck only spoke to the duke so that he would have the order to
leave the men alone so he could go on with his plans
huck wants to find jim before jim can say anything about the duke and king because he doesn’t want
trouble with the two men
