FUEL POLICY Flashcards
What does the fuel schedule at Cathay look like?
Taxi Fuel
Trip Fuel
Contingency Fuel
Destination Holding Fuel
Additional Fuel
Alternate Fuel
Final Reserve Fuel
=FUEL REQUIRED
+Extra Fuel
+Tankering Fuel
+Discretionary Fuel
=TOTAL FUEL
Define “Fuel Required” and “Total Fuel”?
Fuel Required is all items in Total Fuel minus Extra Fuel, Tankering fuel and Discretionary Fuel
What is included in Taxi Fuel?
APU usage
Engine start
Taxi for departure
How is Contingency fuel calculated?
It’s derived using a Performance Based Compliance (PBC) system or 5% of trip fuel
Define Additional Fuel?
Is to cater for en-route depress and/or engine failure
Used if there is more fuel needed to go to the last ERA than we need to go to the destination.
Define Alternate Fuel?
Fuel to make a missed approach, climb to cruise, fly to alternate airport + 5% contingency, descend and complete an approach to landing
Cost index used is 0
Min 90nm is used in calculations
Define Final reserve Fuel?
Equal to 30 min holding at 1500 ft AGL based on planned landing weight at the alternate airport
What figure is used if no Final Reserve Fuel figure is available?
3500 kg for B777-300ER
Define Minimum Reserve Fuel?
It’s the fuel we need after a diversion following a depress and/or engine failure.
Equal to 15 min holding at 1500 ft AGL based on planned landing weight at the ERA
Define Min Div Fuel?
Equal to Alternate Fuel + Final Reserve Fuel
How is it planned to have 1h of fuel in the tanks at landing at the destination?
Alternate + Additional(mandatory) + Rec Extra should not be less than Final Reserve Fuel
What amount of fuel is needed for a “normal” diversion to an ERA?
- Diversion Trip Fuel to the ERA
- Carry out an approach
- Land with 30 min Final Reserve Fuel
What amount of fuel is needed for a diversion to an ERA following a depress and/or engine failure?
- Diversion Trip Fuel to the ERA + 5% contingency
- Carry out an approach
- Land with 15 min Minimum Reserve Fuel
Is the 5% Contingency Fuel required in flight?
No, it’s only a planning requirement
Can a Captain reduce the planned fuel?
They can reduce fuel below Total Fuel but not below Fuel Required
Under what conditions fuel wise can we continue towards our destination?
If we have:
1. Normal Fuel required available, or
2. Having a suitable ERA, or
3. In-flight Fuel Reduction is available
When should the decision to divert to an ERA due to fuel be made at the latest?
Prior to passing overhead or abeam the last suitable ERA
What are the conditions required to do In-flight Fuel Reduction?
- Two independent runways available or two separate runways within 60nm
- WX (METAR+TAF) at or above non-precision minimas for alternates
- X-wind within limits
- No delays expected
What is Normal Fuel required to continue to destination?
- Fuel to destination
- Make an approach to land
- Diversion fuel to alternate with 5% contingency fuel
- Final Reserve Fuel of 30 min
What is the fuel required to do In-flight Fuel Reduction?
- Fuel to continue to destination +
- Extra 5% fuel from overhead or abeam the last ERA +
- Approach to land +
- Final Reserve Fuel of 30 min
What fuel is required at:
1. Destination
2. Destination using In-flight Fuel Reduction
3. Alternate
4. ERA
5. ERA following depress and/or engine failure
- Alternate Fuel + Final Reserve Fuel
- Final Reserve Fuel
- Final Reserve Fuel
- Final Reserve Fuel
- Minimum Reserve Fuel
What is the difference between declaring:
1. “MINIMUM FUEL” and
2. “MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY FUEL”?
- We have committed to land at a specific airport and any change to existing clearance may result in landing with less than planned Final Reserve Fuel. No priority will be given unless a MAYDAY is declared
- The aircraft will land with less than Final Reserve Fuel and shall be given priority to land
What is the definition of an “Isolated Aerodrome”?
It is more then 1h 30 min away from a suitable alternate
What is the requirements when operating to an Isolated aerodrome?
Have 2h of holding fuel at destination
Have current weather report for your ETA
Have a PNR
When a PNR is used, what fuel is it accounting for?
- Fuel to turn onto reciprocal track
- Fuel from PNR to ERA with 5% contingency
- Final Reserve Fuel remaining at the ERA
Is there any contingency fuel included in the “Additional Fuel”?
Yes, there is a 5% buffer included
What is the minimum fuel required for take-off?
Trip Fuel
Contingency (5min=500kg)
Additional Fuel
Holding Fuel
Alternate Fuel
Final Reserve
How much can Contingency Fuel be reduced by the PIC?
By max 10 min of OFP Contingency Fuel
Minimum Contingency fuel remaining can’t be less than 5 min
