ADVERSE WX/RDR 4000 Flashcards
What does the word “RADAR” mean?
RAdio Detection And Ranging
Between which flight levels is the most reflective are for moisture?
FL 150 - FL 230 down to about -15 deg C
What are the dangers associated with attenuation?
The longer the range the more attenuation which can give the appearance of a storm being more intense the closer you get to it.
Treat intense echos from far away as BIG storms
Rain can cause attenuation and hide more rain behind it
What does the difference colors on a Radar screen mean?
Black = 0 - 0,7 mm/h
Green = 0,7 - 4,0 mm/h
Yellow = 4,0 - 12,0 mm/h
Red = 12,0 - above
Magenta = Turbulence based on doppler shift
What does “steep” contour gradients indicate?
Turbulence
How far away, laterally and vertically, should we fly from intense thunderstorm echos?
20 nm laterally and 5’000 ft vertically
Rule of thumb: Clear a TS vertically by min 1’000 ft per 10 kts of windspeed
Why could max gain be useful at higher altitudes?
To see weather that otherwise would be hidden due to the lesser reflectivity above the icing level
What is a good range setting on the ND for the PF and PM?
20 - 80 nm for the PF and at least one range higher for the PM
How is the RDR 4000 scanning in AUTO mode?
+ and - 4’000 ft from your FL
Above 29’000 ft the lower floor shifts to 25’000 ft
What does “hashed” colors mean on the RDR 4000?
Weather is below 25’000 ft
What is the scanning envelope for the RDR 4000 with regards to Magenta colors?
+ and - 5’000 ft and limited to 40 nm
