ALTIMETRY PROCEDURES Flashcards
When shall QNH be set on descent?
On passing transition level or after being cleared to an altitude if there is NO published transition level
What is the purpose of the “ONE TO GO” call in climbs or descents?
To cross check the altimeters before reaching assigned altitude/level
How should altitude/levels be reported in the transition layer?
As Flight Levels when climbing and as Altitudes when descending
Define “Transition Altitude”
The altitude at or below which the vertical position of an aircraft is controlled by reference to altitudes.
Define “Transition Level”
The lowest flight level available for use above the transition altitude.
Define “Transition Layer”
The airspace between the transition altitude and the transition level.
What can happen if QNH very low and you wait to set QNH until Transition Level?
An altitude bust may occur
If there is a fixed Transition Altitude and Transition Level, should we accept level flight in the Transition Layer?
No
When shall altimeter cross checks be completed by the PF and PM on a descent?
20’000 ft AAL
10’000 ft AAL
5’000 ft ALL
1’000 ft ALL
What is the Transition Level in the US and Canada?
FL180
What do we set a 3’940 ft restriction on the MCP on an approach?
3’900 ft
Round up or down to nearest 100 ft
What is QFE?
Altimeter will indicate the height above the airport
