AWOPS/SELECTION OF AIRPORTS Flashcards
Define “Adequate Airport”
- Runway length sufficient
- RFF category is compatible with the aircraft
- Pavement strength is compatible with aircraft weight
- Has sufficient lighting
- Has ATC
- Has NAV aids
- Weather reporting service
Define “Suitable Airport”
Is an airport that is adequate and Met conditions meet the planning minima for the expected landing time and meets the approach, runway and aircraft capabilities and crew qualifications needed.
How much overload of ACN over PCN is acceptable in an emergency?
50% overload.
In extreme emergency no limits apply
What is the difference between a Category A and Category B airport according to Cathay Pacific?
Commanders may operate unrestricted to Category A airports.
Commanders may operate to Category B if competency has been established. Valid for 12 months
What is a Category X airport and which 3 are an example of a CAT X airport?
Is an airport not to be nominated as either a destination or alternate airport on the ATS flightplan but is ok for non-scheduled landings if required for operational reasons.
Adak
Shemya
Samarkand
What RFF category is the B777-300ER?
Cat 9 (61m - 76m)
Cat E in the US
What RFF category is needed to select an airport as a Destination/ Destination Alternates?
Cat 9/Cat 7
What is the minimum NOTAM:ed RFF category that can be accepted for destinations/destination alternates?
Cat 7/Cat 5
What is the minimum RFF category required for a nominated ERA or EDTO ERA?
Cat 4
If planning to fly to an airport with only a GNSS approach, what is the dispatch requirement?
An accepable RAIM prediction for the expected time of use
What approach category aircraft is the B777?
Category D
What is the standard spacing between runway edge lighting and runway center line lights?
60m for Runway edge lighting
15m for runway center line lights
If no minimas are published for take-off, what minimas should be used?
Rwy Edge Lights AND Center Line Lights = 200m
Rwy Edge Lights AND Center Line Markings = 300m
Rwy edge Lights OR Center Line Markings = 400m
Adequate Visual Reference (day) = 500m
If a Take-off Alternate is needed, within what distance does it have to be?
400nm or 1524nm if we are using EDTO
What type of minima are used for a Take-off Alternate?
Normal plate minima without any enhancements
RVR/VIS is used for NPA and PA approaches
Ceiling at or above MDH for NPA, no ceiling applicable for PA
What is the difference between TEMPO and INTER in a TAF?
TEMPO = changes to occur for periods less than 60 min
INTER = changes to occur for periods less than 30 min
What consideration do you take for PROB, TEMPO och INTER when planning your Destination?
TEMPO and INTER shall be considered and are limiting
PROB 40 or greater shall be considered and are limiting
How do you convert VIS into RVR?
HIALS+Runway lighting = Day: VIS x 1,5 Night: VIS x 2,0
Other light installation = Day: VIS x 1,0 Night: VIS x 1,5
No lights = Day: VIS x 1,0 Night: N/A
When can you convert VIS to RVR?
In the planning stage only and not for take-off
What does
1. “550M/0,8KM” mean?
2. “800M” mean?
- Means RVR is 550m and VIS is 0,8km
- RVR and VIS is the same value, here 800m
Can you plan for LVO minimas for your Destination?
Yes, but then your destination alternate has to permit CAT I operation
What happens to your planning if your Destination is below minima or no weather for it is available?
You need 2 destination alternates
Weather has to be at or above Planning Minima for Filing as Destination Alternate
What type of minima are used in the planning phase for your Destination?
Normal plate minima without enhancement
INTER/TEMPO are controlling
PROB 40 or more are controlling
Use RVR/VIS
For NPA ceiling must be at or above MDH, no ceiling applicable for precision approaches
What type of minima are used in the planning phase for your Destination Alternate?
For CAT II and CAT III = CAT 1 RVR
For CAT I and APV approaches = NPA RVR/VIS. Ceiling must be at or above MDH
For NPA approaches = NPA RVR/VIS +1000m. Ceiling must be at or above
MDH+200ft
Are we allowed to use LVO minimas in the planning phase for Destination Alternates?
No
For what period does the weather have to valid in the planning phase for Destination, Destination Alternates, ERA:s and Take-off alternates?
+- 60min ETA for all
What consideration do you take for PROB, TEMPO och INTER when planning your Destination Alternate?
INTER and TEMPO are controlling
PROB 40 or greater are controlling
How do you plan for the use of an EDTO ERA in the planning phase in relation to what minima to use?
+-60min before expected ETA the weather should be at or above planning minima
Planning minima:
PA = DA/H +200ft and RVR/VIS +800m
NPA= MDA/H +400ft and RVR/VIS +1500m
What is the definition of “An isolated aerodrome”?
No acceptable alternate within 1h 30min of the destination
What are the requirements to waive the use of an alternate airport or use the “isolated aerodrome procedure?
- Forcast weather including TEMPO, INTER and PROB 40 shall 60min before ETA to 60min after ETA be above “Minimas for filing as destination alternate”
- Alternate+Reserve fuel is substituted for 2h holding fuel at normal cruise consumption.
- A CP and PNR shall be provided on the CFP
How far in time and distance is a twin engine aircraft (B777-300ER) allowed to be from an adequate airport?
60 min flying time on one engine or 456nm
Can we use Circling minima?
Not allowed at Cathay Pacific
In TAF and METAR, what is the wind direction referenced to?
True north
List some CAT B Airports?
Cairns
Mumbai
Hong Kong
New York JFK
Zurich
What RNP min value is the B777 approved for?
RNP 0,11
What are the Planning minima for US destination alternate aerodromes?
- One nav facility:
MDA/H or DA/H = +400 ft
RVR/VIS = +1600m (1SM) - Two nav facilities:
MDA/H or DA/H = +200 ft
RVR/VIS = +800m (1/2 SM)
