Q

What is the theory of psychosexual stages of development?

Q

What is castration anxiety?

A

The fear boys will be castrated after the attraction to their mother is discovered (due to oedipus complex)
This is because they realise anatomical difference between girls and makes sense of it that girls were castrated since they have no penis

16
Q

Sample method used

A

Self selected - he was the child who’s parents knew Freud and his mother was a previous patient. Reported for his disorders (phobias) and VOLUNTEERED by his father

17
Q

How was data collected in this study?

A

By Hans’ father sending letters to Freud with information about Hans,
collected through the father asking Hans questions so Hans SELF REPORTED his phobias/disorders etc

18
Q

How old was Little Hans during the study?

A

3-5 years old

19
Q

How is Hans’s attraction to his mother (within Oedipus complex) shown?

A

Seduction attempts on his mother:
asked why his mother doesn’t touch his penis after being powdered after bath
Giraffe fantasy

20
Q

What is a phobia?

A

An anxiety disorder characterised by persistent fear out of proportion to the danger & a compelling desire to escape the situation.

21
Q

What phobias did Hans have?

A

Fear of horses
Fear of carts specifically falling over
Fear of drowning in the bath

22
Q

What did Hans phobia of horses represent?

A

A manifestation of an unconscious fear of his father because the blinkers and muzzle represented his fathers moustache + glasses
And phobia of biting fingers = castration anxiety

23
Q

What did Hans phobia of carts represent?

A

A manifestation of his unconscious desire for his dad to fall over due to jealousy as a result of Oedipus complex

24
Q

What did Hans phobia of drowning in the bath represent?

A

The manifestation of his unconscious guilt for wishing his sister would drown so he had his mum all for himself

25
Psychoanalysis
A form of therapy that is intensive and long-term and in which the aim is to alleviate distress by giving the patient insight into unconscious mental processes.
26
Where did the study take place in?
Vienna, Austria
27
Procedure of this study?
1) Father recorded Little Hans behaviour and conversations and sent in a letter to Freud 2) Who wrote back with his interpretations of behaviour + advice
28
Giraffe fantasy
One giraffe was big (represents father) and the other crumpled (mother) Hans took crumpled one from big one which called out and sat on crumpled one
29
Plumber fantasy
A plumber replaced Hans penis with a bigger one using pliers
30
How did Freud conclude Hans had recovered from Oedipus complex?
He began to emulate/identify his father as shown by plumber fantasy so no longer desired to kill him Recover from castration anxiety when his phobia of horses resolved
31
Conclusions by Freud
Claimed to have found evidence for psychosexual development: Oedipus complex + castration anxiety in the phallic stage by boys The nature of phobias and his theory that they are the product of unconscious anxiety displaced onto harmless external objects
32
Is this study internally valid?
No heavy researcher bias: findings were based on interpretations by Freud and father to support evidence of his theory. Not objective. Hans had data collected by father asking leading questions
33
Is this study externally valid?
No, case study of only 1 child means the sample does not represent girls, people from diff cultures/ economic bg etc Results cannot be accurately generalised to other children
34
Is this study internally reliable?
No, procedure was based on father asking Hans whichever questions he felt like Had no standardised method to interview him so the experience Little Hans had wasn't consistent to prove a conclusion - not replicable
35
Is this study externally reliable?
No, case study size of 1 is not large enough to establish consistent proof of psychosexual development however Freud would say his other studies do indicate consistent effect
36
Why is this study unethical?
Psychological harm/embarrassment from being questioned by father on phobias/ fantasies
37
Why is this study ethical?
Father gave informed consent by volunteering Little Hans by self selected sample Confidentiality kept = Little Hans No deception used by Freud - he wrote back with his interpretations
38
Strengths of using self report
Only way to collect data on Little Hans phobias, fantasies etC That is not possible by observation or physiological measures
39
Weaknesses of self report
Lack in validity: -leading questions so Little Hans lead to give data that supports Freuds theory rather than accurate measure -collected qualitative data that is subjective based on Freuds interpretations
40
Strengths of case study
Collected lots of detailed data on abnormal psychology: intense phobias
