Spearman's Rho correlation co efficient Flashcards
When is this test used?
Ordinal level data in a correlational study to find a significant positive or negative correlation
Co variables
2 variables that have ordinal data of each to see if there is a significant relationship affecting each other
Ranking scores for each co variable
Rank lowest score as 1 and put into a new column then repeat for next lowest score
If ranks are tied, give midpoint of score
Difference between rank values
For each difference in rank values of co variable for every participant
What is done with the difference between rank values?
squared to remove negative sign
Calculate the correlation co efficient
1 -
[(6 x all the squared differences added together)
divided by
(number of participants x number of participants² -1)]
Symbol for correlation co efficient
Rₛ
Critical value for correlation co efficient
Read off value from number of participants at a significance level of p<0.05
How do we know if we have a significant correlation ?
If calculated value of Rₛ is bigger than critical value of Rₛ (ignoring the sign) Then at this level of significance there is significant correlation
Is N the number of pairs or total number of participants?
Number of pairs
