Fractures of the knee Flashcards
MOI for patellar fx
Direct trauma
Xray views for patellar fx
AP and lateral
When to operate on a patellar fx
Operate if:
Extensor mechanism compromised
displaced fx or transverse (avulsion) fx
Osteochondroitin dissecans
When to not operate on patellar fx
Closed fx
not displaced more than 3 mm
not transverse fx
extension preserved
What is osteochondroitin dissecans
Break in articular cartilage which decreases blood supply to that area
Think about if normal healing doesn’t occur
Usually occurs in adolescents
MOI for high fibular fx
Trauma
Important to check with proximal head fibular fx
Distal neurologic deficits d/t common peroneal nerve injury
What is a Maisonneuve fx
Severe ankle external rotation injury
Types of Femoral fxs
supracondylar, condylar, or combination
Reasons for tibial and femoral fxs in young versus old people
Young: high energy trauma (skiing)
Old: underlying osteoporosis
What xrays to order for tibial and femoral fxs
AP and lateral
