Bone forming tumors Flashcards
What is Paget’s ds
old, bone enlarged
What is fibrous dysplasia
young, bone enlarged
What is osteopetrosis
Marble bone, no marrow space
What is melorheostosis
Candlewax
What is osteoma
Bone island, cancellous, pelvis
Clinical signs of osteoid osteoma
Night pain, NSAIDs help
younger pt
Round nidus, metaphyseal cortex
Will resolve on own in up to 3 years
What is important about osteosarcoma
High grade malignant bone forming tumor
occurs in teens and older adults
minimal sx, pts aren’t sick
Most die from metastasis to lungs
What do you see on xray of osteosarcoma
Eats away at bone (lytic)
No sclerotic rim because bone doesn’t have time to form around it
Lucent areas aren’t yet calcified
“sunburst” appearance
tx of osteosarcoma
- staging workup (CXR, bone scan, etc)
- CT guided core needle bx
- pathology staging
- pre op chemo
- wide resection
- post op chemo
- surveillance (alk phos)
NO RADIATION
What is the MC benign cartilage lesion
Osteochondroma
How do osteochondromas form
Grow from growth plates, point away from a joint
Osteochondroma on xray
No periosteal rxn
continuity of stalk with canal
at growth plate
points away from joint
What is an enchondroma
Begins in epiphysis, may calcify later in life
What is the second MC malignant tumor of bone
Chondrosarcoma
Do chondrosarcomas metastasize
Never metastisize but may recur
