Q

What is acute heamtogenous osteomyelitis and who does it occur in

A

Q

How does acute hematogenous osteomyelitis occur

A

A bloodborne pathogen infects a blood vessel in the bone, the bone demineralizes as the infection spreads (via expanding vessels)
Sequestrum and involucrum occur later in the ds

Q

90% chance it’s septic arthritis in kids if 3/4 of these are true…

A
  1. WBC > 12000
  2. can’t bear weight
  3. Temp >101.3
  4. ESR > 40
17
Q

What is Charcot arthropathy

A

Not an infection

Occurs in diabetics, joints crumble and fall apart

18
Q

How to tell the difference between Charcot arthropathy and osteomyelitis

A

In charcot arthropathy, swelling and erythema will improve with elevation
they won’t improve in osteomyelitis
