What is the Therapeutic Alliance?
The human connection between physical therapist and the patient
What are the 3 aspects in the Therapeutic Alliance?
-Mutual agreements and understandings regarding goals
-Tasks of each of the partners in the alliance
-Bonds between the parters
“Centered around liking, caring and trusting”
What are the effects of a Positive Alliance?
-Improved treatment adherence for patients with brain injuries and multiple pathologies
-Decreased depressive symptoms
-Improved patient satisfaction in patients with MSK conditions
-Improved physical function in geriatric population and patients with chronic Low Back Pain (LBP)
How do you develop a Therapeutic Alliance via non-verbal communication?
-Regular eye contact
-An open posture
-Appropriate humming and nodding

How do you demonstrate verbal communication?
-Be genuinely curious about patients thoughts and feelings
-Repeat, summarize or reflect the patients thoughts and feelings

1) Invest in the beginning
-Create rapport quickly, elicit the patients concerns, and plan the visit with the patient
2) Elicit the patients perspectives
-Ask for the patients ideas, elicit specific request, explore the impact on the patients life
3) Demonstrate empathy
-Be open to the patients emotions, make empathic statement, convey empathy non-verbally
4) Invest in the end
- Deliver diagnostic information, provide education, involve patient in making decisions, complete the visit

A question intended to stimulate the patient to dig deeper into the topic or to add themes to the conversation
What is a closed ended question?
Questions to ask for specific, often concise information
What is a Parallel Question?
Aligning your question with the patients story and thought process (Describe Mechanism of Injury)
Let the patient finish their thought and start to question where they left off
What is Directive Questioning?
Purposefully formulating your open questions to influence the direction of the conversation
What is Time Structuring?
Firmly directing the conversation due to time constraints
How do you show Active Listening in verbal and non-verbal communication?
-Showing your listening through active verbal and non-verbal signals
-Paraphrasing patient Response
