Fat as fuel Flashcards
What can activate lipase
Glycogen and adrenaline
How do free fatty acids travel around the body
Bound to albumin in the blood
Describe the metabolism of glycerol
In most tissues it enters the glycolysis pathway to be converted to pyruvate, then it is placed in the TCA cycle.
In the liver and in starvation it enters the glycolysis pathway, converted to glucose by gluconeogenesis
Describe how fatty acids enter the mitochondrial matrix
The fatty acid-CoA diffuses through the first membrane and carnitine palmitoyl transferase I takes off the CoA and adds the fatty acid to carnitine
The fatty acid carnitine diffuses through the second membrane and carnitine palmitoyl transferase II takes off the carnitine and adds on a new CoA
What are the intermediates in the B-oxidation pathway
Fatty acyl CoA
Enoyl CoA
3-L-hydroxyacyl-CoA
B-ketoacyl CoA
Fatty acyl CoA (2C shorter) + Acetyl CoA
What enzyme converts a fatty acyl CoA to Enoyl CoA
Acyl CoA dehydrogenase
What does acyl CoA dehydrogenase do?
Convers fatty acyl CoA to enoyl CoA producing a FADH2
What enzyme converts an enoyl CoA to 3-L-hydroxyacyl CoA
Enoyl-CoA hydratase
What does Enoyl-CoA hydratase do?
Converts Enoyl CoA to 3-L-hydroxyacyl CoA using water
What enzyme converts 3-L-hydroxyacyl CoA to B-ketoacyl CoA
3-L-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase
What does 3-L-hydroxyacyl CoA dehydrogenase do
Converts 3-hydroxyacyl CoA to B-ketoacyl CoA producing NADH + H+
What enzyme converts B-ketoacyl CoA to a fatty acyl CoA
B-ketoacyl CoA thiolase
What does B-ketoacyl CoA thiolase do?
Converts B-ketoacyl CoA to a fatty acyl CoA using CoASH
If a fatty acid has 16C atoms how many cycles of B-oxidation will it go through
7 repeats, producing 8 acetyl CoA
How many molecules of ATP will a fatty acid with 16C atoms produce?
106
