Amblyopia
impairment of vision without any lesion detected
Arcus Senilis
White or gray band around the margin of the cornea (around iris) as a result of cholesterol deposition or hyaline change or both. Occurs with advancing age
Belepharitis
Inflammation of eyelids
Cataract
opacity in or in the lens.
Chalazion
cystic swelling in a eyelid gland due to blocked duct
Choroiditis
Inflammation of the choroid or uveal tract
Chemosis
Excessive edema of the conjunctiva

narrowing of a lacrimal duct

bulging of the eyes
Glaucoma
set of diseases in which there is increased ocular pressure caused by failure of the aqueous humor to be absorbed.
Hordeolum
Also called a stye. Localized, purulent, inflammatory bacterial infection of one or more glands of the eyelids.
Hypermetropia
(hyperopia) farsightedness
Hyphema
bleeding in to the anterior chamber of the eye
Macular Degeneration
loss of central vision due to changes in a lining of the retina. Age- related.
Miosis
contraction of the pupil.
Mydriasis
Physiologic or morbid dilation of the pupil. Mydriatic drugs are used to dilate pupils
Myopia
nearsightedness
Nystagmus
An involuntary, rapid, rhythmic movement of the eyeball which can be horizontal, vertical, rotatory, or mixed. This is a symptom of systemic illness such as multiple sclerosis or intoxication.
Papilledema
swelling of the optic disc, usually as a result of intracranial pressure, malignant hypertension, or thrombosis of a retinal vein
Presbyopia
Impairment of vision due to old age. This is caused by a decrease in the power of accommodation that causes the near point of distinct vision to be removed further from the eye.
Pterygium
thick triangular piece of tissue that extends medially from the nasal corneal border to the inner canthus
Ptosis
: dropping of upper lid from paralysis of the Third nerve or from sympathetic innervation
Retinopathy
general term for degenerative, non-inflammatory diseases of the retina
Scleritis
inflammation of the sclera
Scotoma
area of lost or depressed VA surrounding area of normal VA
Synechia
(plural = synechiae) Adhesion of the iris to the cornea or the lens
Strabismus
deviation of the eye that the patient cannot control
Uveitis
inflammation of all or part of the uveal tract or choroid.
Xanthoma palpebrarum
Also called Xanthelasma. a soft, yellow spot or plaque occurring on the eyelids, often in groups.
Xerophthalmia
dryness of the conjunctiva and cornea due to Vitamin A deficiency
