Effects: Increases heart rate and heart strength. Vasoconstrictor, dilates bronchi, dilates pupils, relaxes muscular walls.
Used to treat: Asthma, Bronchitis, and allergies
Adrenergic
Effects: increases peripheral circulation, decreases BP and vasodilation.
Used to Treat: Hypertension
Adrenergic Blocking Agents
Effects: Relieves pain without loss of consciousness. Narcotic or Nonnarcotic. Narcotics come from poppy and cause drowsiness.
Analgesic
Effect: Generalized or local lack of feeling depending on administration method
Anasthetic
Effect: neutralizes acid in the stomach
Antacid
Effect: Relieves/Reduces anxiety and muscle tension.
Used to treat: Panic disorders, anxiety, and insomnia.
Antianxiety
Effect: Controls cardiac arrhythmias by altering nerve impulses within the heart
Antiarrhythmic
Effect: Destroys/prohibits microorganism growth.
Types: Aminoglycosides, Cephalosporins, Penicillins, Tetracyclines
Antibiotics
Effect: prevents or delays blood clotting.. Oral types should not be taken with Aspirin as could cause internal bleeding.
Anticoagulants. Also called Blood Thinners
Effect: prevents or relieves convulsions. Can reduce excessive brain stimulation to control seizures/epilepsy symptoms
Anticonvulsant
Effects: prevents or relieves symptoms of depression. Also used for migraines.
Antidepressant
Effects: controls diabetes by regulating the level of glucose in the blood and the metabolism of carb and fats
Antidiabetic
Effects: prevents or relieves diarrhea
Antidiarrheal
Effects: controls nausea and vomiting. Generally with vomiting center of brain
Antiemetic
Effects: Kills fungus
Antifungal
Effects: Kills parasitic worms
Antihelminthic
Effects: Counteracts histamine and controls allergic reactions
Antihistamine
Effects: prevents or controls high blood pressure. Block nerve impulses that cause arteries to constrict thus decreasing BP.
Some slow HR and decrease contraction force. Others reduce the hormone aldosterone that causes BP to rise from salt and water retention
Antihypertensive
Effects: counteracts inflammation

Effect: Kills normal and abnormal cancerous cells by interfering with cell reproduction
Antineoplastic
Effect: relieves itching
Antipruritic
Effects: Reduces Fever
Antipyretic
Effect: Prevents the growth of microorganisms
Antiseptic
Effect: controls or relieves coughing. Codeine is very common and works on the brain to control coughing
Antitussive
Effect: Dilates or opens the bronchi to improve breathing
Bronchodilator
Effect: Strengthens heart muscle
Cadriogenic
Effect: yeetus fetus
Contraceptive
Effect: Reduces nasal congestion and swelling
Decongestant
Effect: increases the excretion of urine which promotes loss of water and salt in the body.
Used to Treat: hypertension
Diuretics
Effect: induces vomiting

Effect: assists in removal of secretions from bronchopulmonary membranes
Expectorant
Effect: controls bleeding
Hemostatic
Effect: produces sleep or hypnosis
Hypnotic
Effect: lowers blood glucose level
Hypoglycemic
Effect: Suppresses body’s natural immune response to an antigen.
Used to treat: autoimmune disorders like MS and RA
Immunosuppressant
Effect: Used to promote normal bowel function
Laxative
Effect: Constricts pupils of the eye
Miotic
Effect: produces the relaxation of skeletal muscle
Muscle relaxant
Effect: Dilates the pupils of the eye
Mydriatic
Effect: Produces sleep or stupor. In moderate doses depresses nervous system and relieve pain.
Narcotic
Effect: Produce visual hallucinations
Psychedelic
Effect: Provides relaxation without causing sleep

Effect: helps control cholesterol and lipid levels
Statin
Effect: Speeds up the heart and respiratory system. Used to increase alterness
Stimulant
Effect: Reduce mental anxiety and tension
Tranquilizer
Effect: promotes resistance to infectious diseases
Vaccine
Effect: Relaxes blood vessels to lower BP
Vasodilator
Effect: Produces muscle contractions that impact capillaries and arteries and elevates BP
Vasopressor
Effect: Organic substance found naturally in food that are essential for normal metabolism
