1: Olfactory Nerve
Sensory. Smell
Damage: no smell
2: Optic Nerve
Sensory. Visual Acuity and Visual Fields
Damage: Blindness
3: Oculomotor Nerve
Motor. (4 of 6 eye muscles) Pupillary Reactions, Extraocular movements (including opening the eye)
Damage: Droopy Eyelid, constant dilated pupil, inability to rotate eye
4: Trochlear Nerve
Sensory and Motor. Very small. Pupillary Reactions, Extraocular Movements (eye opening too)
Damage: Cannot move eye
5: Trigeminal Nerve
Sensory and Motor. Largest. facial sensation, jaw movements, corneal reflexes, voice, speech
6: Abducens nerve
Sensory and Motor: Extraocular movements to (eye opening) Laterus Rectus
Damage: pulls eye medially, cannot look laterally
7: Facial Nerve
Sensory and Motor: Facial movements and gustation (taste), voice, speech
Damage: distorts taste, especially with sweet foods, facial sagging
8: Vestibulotrochlear Nerve
Sensory. Also called acoustic nerve.
Vestibular Branch: Equilibrium
Cochlear Branch: Hearing
Damage: deafness, dizziness, no balance
9: Glossopharyngeal
Sensory and Motor. Sensory Portion: tonsils, salivary gland, back 1/3 of tongue
Motor: Muscles of pharynx
Also swallowing and gag reflex
Damage: loss of bitter/sour taste, difficulty swallowing
10: Vagus Nerve
Sensory and Motor.
Sensory: Autonomic organs of thoracic and abdominal cavities, breathing, heartbeat, hunger pangs, peristalsis
Motor: Voice, speech
Damage: impact speech and swallowing
11: Accessory Nerve
Motor. Shrugging the shoulders and turning head
Damage: difficulty doing those things ^
12: Hypoglossal Nerve
Motor. Voice and Speech
Damage: Difficulty sticking out tongue, swallowing, difficulty speaking
