Exam 3 Spinal cord SG (pt2) Flashcards
Which spinal nerve components form intercostal nerves?
Anterior rami of spinal nerves T2 – T12
What structures do intercostal nerves supply?
These nerves connect directly to the structures they supply:
- intercostal muscles
- abdominal muscles
- skin overlying those muscles
What structures do posterior rami of thoracic nerves supply?
deep back muscles and skin of the posterior aspect of the thorax
Name the subunits of the plexuses.
Roots
Trunks
Divisions
Nerves
How are the roots of plexus subunit formed?
From the spinal cord
How are the trunks of plexus subunit formed?
By union of roots with:
Superior trunk
Middle trunk
Inferior trunk
How are the divisions of plexus subunit formed?
By branching trunks:
Anterior division
Posterior division
How are the nerves of plexus subunit formed?
By extending to the body part innervated
Name the spinal nerves that contribute to the phrenic nerve.
C3, C4, C5
Above what spinal cord level does complete severing result in respiratory arrest?
the spinal cord above the origin of the phrenic nerve (C3, C4, C5)
What physical manifestation indicates radial nerve injury?
Wrist drop, which is the inability to extend the wrist and fingers
What causes radial nerve injury?
improperly administered intramuscular injections into the deltoid muscle or by a cast applied too tightly around the mid-humerus
What are the two nerves that comprise the sciatic nerve?
The tibial and common fibular nerves
What does the sciatic nerve supply?
muscles of the leg, foot, and toes
How does injury to the sciatic nerve manifest itself?
sciatica, pain that may extend from the buttock down the posterior and lateral aspect of the leg and into the food.
Name the region of the body supplied by the brachial plexus
The shoulders and upper limbs
Name the region of the body supplied by the cervical plexus
The skin and muscles of the head, neck, superior portion of the shoulders, and chest, and the diaphragm
Name the region of the body supplied by the lumbar plexus
The anterolateral abdominal wall, external genitals, and part of the lower limbs
Name the region of the body supplied by the sacral plexus
The buttocks, perineum, and lower limbs
What is the dermatome of the face and scalp?
Cranial nerve V, Trigeminal
What is the causative agent of shingles?
Herpes zoster
What nervous tissue does shingles affect?
Posterior root ganglion
How is shingles associated with dermatomes?
causes pain, skin discoloration, and a line of blisters on the skin coinciding with dermatomal distribution of the sensory nerve to posterior root ganglion
What are the two principal functions of the spinal cord are in maintenance of homeostasis?
Nerve impulse propagation Information integration (processing)
What part of the spinal cord carries out each of the functions (in maintenance of homeostasis)?
Gray matter and white matter?
