Exam 2 Slide show Nervous Tissue (pt1) Flashcards
What are the two organizational levels of the nervous system?
CNS and PNS
What composes the CNS?
Brain and spinal cord
What composes the PNS?
Crainal nerves, spinal nerves, and peripheral nerves
What is an association of neuronal axons in the peripheral nervous system?
A nerve
What is a group of neuronal cell bodies in the peripheral nervous system?
A ganglion
What is an association of neuronal axons in the central nervous system?
Tract
What is an association of nerve cell bodies in the central nervous system?
Nucleus
What are cells that possess electrical excitability?
Neurons
What are cells of the nervous system that support, nourish, and protect the neurons?
Neurogila
Compare the number of neurons with the number of neuroglial cells.
There are more neuroglia than neurons.
How long can some axons be?
3 feet long
Which part of the neuron is the receiving portion?
Dendrites
Which part of the neuron propagates impulses to another neuron, muslce, or nerve?
Axon
What do axons contain?
- Mitochondria
- Microtubules
- Neurofibrils
Does protein synthesis occur in the axon?
No, because it does not contain rough endoplasmic reticulum
What are the two types of axonal transport? and What is the directionality of each of the two types?
Slow axonal transport - One-way only
Fast axonal transport - Two-way transport
What do the axonal transports move?
Organelles and materials that are used to form axolemma membranes, synaptic end bulbs, and synaptic vesicles.
What are the three types of neurons?
Multipolar, Bipolar, and Unipolar
Which neuron is known as the “type” neuron?
Multipolar
Where are multipolar neurons found?
the brain and spinal cord, (motor neurons)
Where are bipolar neurons found?
In special sensory organs
Where are unipolar neurons found?
- Meisners corpuscle
- pacinian corpuscle
- Merkel cells and discs
- Nociceptor
(PNS)
What are GABAergic neurons of the cerebellar cortex, and constitute the sole output of all motor coordination from the cerebellar cortex?
Purkinje cells (CNS)
What are the primary neural cell types in the corticospinal tract, and are involved in cognition in the prefrontal cortex?
Pyramidal neurons (CNS)
What are the neuroglia cells of the CNS?
- Astrocytes
- Oligodendrocytes
- Microglia
- Ependymal cells
What are the neuroglia cells of the PNS?
- Schwann cells (neurolemmocytes)
- Satellite cells
