Evaluation of animals studies in attchment Flashcards
what is a strength of Harlow study.
is that it can establish cause and effect as Harlow had high control over the extraneous variables and can be confident that IV ( Cloth/ wire mother) has affected the DV (how much time did that monkey spent with the mother). This is a strength because the results are unlikely to be affected by the confounding variables. therefore they study has high internal validity.
how is high control strength for lorenz study.
because Lorenz had high control over the extraneous variables and can establish cause and effect. Also, can be confident that IV ( wheather the effected were hatched with lorene or the real mother) had affected the DV ( who did the goslings followed ). This is strength because the results are unlikely to be affected by the confounding variables . therefore gives the study high internal validity.
how is ethical issue a limitation for both studies.
because in Harlows study animal were damaged and killed and Lorenz study was criticised as the geese imprinting on him it was said they have missed the opportunities to learn stuff from there mothers test they might have need to survive. This is a limitation because the protection of animals is harmed as they have been used for research which id not acceptable in today’s world.
why is contradictory is a limitation of both studies
because lorenz state that attachment occurs due the imprinting and Harlow found out that attachment occurs due to the comfort contact nit due to food which is contradicted by the learning theory which states that attachment occurs due to operant and classical conditioning on the basis of the food an not due to imprinting or contact comfort. This is a limitation because this shows that both studies claim high not be valid for attachment in humans.
how is animal used to investigate attachment behaviour is a limitation for both studies.
because lorenz used geese for imprinting and Harlow used rhesus monkeys to investigate contact comfort. this is a limitation because it might not generalise to the humans as there are differences between them such as in emotions and intelligence and it could be that humans might have not re acted in the similar way as the animals so therefore it lack external validity.
