bowlby's monotropic theory Flashcards
what does the bowlby’s monotropic theory states.
his theory explains why and how babies attachment if formed. his theory claims that attachment is an innate process which gives survival advantages ( its adaptive). he believes that babies are born with an instinct to form attachment daily with their primary caregiver which is the mother in most cases not always. this is called monotropy - one attachment is more important then others.
babies show behaviours such as crying, smiling and clinging. these are called social realesers and they are designed to get the caregiver attention so they can be close and give love to the baby. to form this attachment there is a critical periods which is from birth to 2.5 year and if the attachment isn’t formed within this critical period then babies are most likely to face emotional and social problems in life. Baby who forms healthy attachment they build an internal working model- its mental framework or template which shoes how relationships work. and babies who are loved and cred for, they are likely to have a positive relation in future such as trusting and safe.
how is a limitation of bowlbys theory is that it ignores the nature in the nature vs nurture debate.
because his theory claims that attachment had evolved behaviour that would enhance the survival and therefore its innate so it contradicts the learning theory which suggests that attachment if formed due to association and reinforcement. this is a limitation because this shows tats bowl by theory might jot be a valid explanation to tell how attachment sir med. attachment is formed.
how is a limitation of bowlby theory is that the temperament plays a important role in the development of social behaviour.
because innately some babies are just more anxious then other or more sociable then others temperament is describes as genetically influenced- personality - irrespective of early attachment experiences. its a limitation because if temperament does have signifant impact on people future then bowlby may have her exaggerated the importance of early experiences.
how is a limitation of bowlby theory is that mono-tropic relationships aren’t as common as bowlby States.
because Scahffer and Emerson found out that although most of kids primary care giver was mother but there was a significant amount of kids forming multiple attachments at the same time - 27% of infants formed joint first attachment. this is a limitation because it contradicts that baby natural form their attachment to their primary caregiver mother ( monotropy) which limits the validity of the explanation of attachment.
how is a limitation of bowlby theory is that it overlook’s the role of the father and makes them unimportant in the rally stage of the infants develpoment and seen as largely economically.
which is not the case in most cases because Grossman found out that even though the mother has a really important role in the nurturing of the child however the father plays a big role in the development of the child for play. In some cases father is the primary caregiver and they also take care of the child. this is limitation because it suggests that the theory is outdated or sexist.
