cultural variation Flashcards

1
Q

what was the method that VAN IJZENDOORN and KROONENBERG used.

A

the reacher located 32 studies conducted in 8 countries of attachment where the stranger situation had been investigate in proportion of infants with different attachment type. approx 2,000 children were used. the data was meta analysed.

Q

what’s were the finding of VAN IJZENDOORN and KROONENBERG

A

in almost all countries, securely attachment was very common. Securely attachment was the highest in UK 95% and lowest in china ( 50%), insecure avoidant was the highest in Germany 25% and lowest in Japan 5% and insecure resistance was highest in Israel ( 29%) and lowest in the UK ( 3%). The difference within the cross- cultural variation is 1.5 greater than between the cross cultural variation.

Q

what was the conclusion of the study

A

the cross- cultural variation similarities ( the fact that most of the babies are securely attached universally ) suggest the aspect of attachment is mostly innate.
the cross-cultural variation difference ( the fact that Not all babies are securely attachment globally) suggest that aspect of attachment are influenced by culturally specific child rearing practices.

Q

how is a strength of a cultural variation is that it has high population validity.

A

because in the research approx 2,000 participants were used which is a big sample to use. this is a strength because it increases the internal validity of the study as it reduces the impact of biased methodology and unusual participants over the meta analysis.

Q

how is the strength of cultural variation is that most of the studies were conducted by the indigenous psychologists.

A

because for the research the German team was used and also Takahashi who was Japanese this means that the cross-cultural variation will be avoided such as communicating the instructions with the participants and misunderstanding of the language of the participant. this is a strength because the participants and the reacher would have communicated properly which increase the validity pf the stat collected devout cultural variations in attachment.

Q

how is a limitation of cultural variation is that its affected by confounding. variables.

A

because the same study was used for the strange situation as well. because kagan argued that the temperament has import influence on child behaviour then the strange situation. this is a limitation because it suggest that the finding of the study lack validity.
