Agentic state of explanation of obedience. Flashcards
what’s an agentic state
its a mental state where people don’t feel responsible for their actions as they think they are action for an authority figure i.e as an agent.
what is an agent
agent is someone who acts for or in place of someone else. They don feel high anxiety when they find out what they are doing is wrong but they feel powerless to do so.
what is it called when you are in a opposite state of being in agentic state.
Autonomous state - where an individual is free to act according to their own principles and feel some responsibility go their actions.
what is an agentic shift
its a process of shifting responsibility of one action’s to someone else.
what did milgram concluded why did agentic shift occurred in his investigation.
its due to when someone preceives someone as an authority figure.
what are the binding factors
An aspects of the situation which allows a person to ignore or minimise the damaging effect of their behaviour and thus reduce the moral strain of their feelings. In millrun study it occurred because people said they felt powerless to disobey.
how is one of the strength of agentic state of explanation of obedience is that its supported by milligrams research.
because in his experiment many participants resisting giving shocks and asked the experimenter tats who is responsible for the learner harm. when the experimenter said “ I am responsible” the participants continued without any further objection. This is a strength because it supports the explanation of the eugenic state as people continued when they fret they are no longer responsible and felt that they are acting as the experimenter agent which gives validity to the explanation.
how is a limitation of agentic state is that it has contradictory research.
because rank et al found out thats when in a hospital when a doctor told nurses to Give an excessive dose of drug to a patient 16 out of 18 disobeyed as they continued staying in their autonomous state even though the doctor held authority but they still disobeyed. This is a limitation because it shows the explanation of agentic states not valid for all the situations.
how is a strength of agentic state is that its supported by hoflings research.
because in his experiment the 22 nurses were asked to administer a drug ( the dose was written on the bottle) to a patient 21 out of 22 obeyed and went to the hetch to administer the drug even though it was against the rules and a signature if doctor was needed. this was all done through a phone call of a doctor. This shows they took no responsibility of their actions as they thought they were acting for an authority figure in this case the doctor. this is a strength because the explanation of agentic state shows milligrams conclusion was valid.
how is a limitation of agentic state is that there are other reasons why people do cruel acts.
because milgram detected thats most of his participants how signs of cruelty and they went uptown 450 v because the expressed their sadly impulses through this. Also, in the Stanford prison experiment Zimbardo also found out that participants who were became increasively abusive even though there was no authority figure to tell them to do it. This is a limitation because it shows people don’t always feel un-responsible for their actions due to agentic state there are other reasons as well.
