Endocrine System Disorders Flashcards
Diabetes Insipidus
disease characterized by passage of a large quantity of dilute urine plus intense thirst and dehydration caused by inadequate release of antidiuretic hormone (ADH)
-syndrome marked by intense thirst and urine output
Pituitary Dwarfism
pituitary gland does not make enough growth hormone
-this results in a child’s slow growth pattern and an unusually small stature (below average height)
Gigantism
unusual or abnormal largeness
Grave’s Disease
Disorder resulting from hyperactive thyroid gland
Goiter
abnormal enlargement of your thyroid gland
Grave’s Disease
Disorder resulting from hyperactive thyroid gland
- continually stimulate TH release
- person makes antibodies against thyroid follicular cells
- ex: eyeballs may protrude, sweating, rapid irregular heartbeat
Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus
pancreas produces little or no insulin
Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus
insulin is present but its effects are deficient (makes it but does not use insulin properly)
Cushing’s Syndrome
caused by an ACTH -releasing pituitary tumor
- condition that occurs from exposure to high cortisol levels
ex: buffalo hump
Addison’s Disease
major hyposecretory disorder of the adrenal cortex, usually involves deficits in both glucocorticoids and mineralocorticoids
-adrenal glands do not produce enough hormones
