Chapter 20 Lymphatic System (quiz 2) Flashcards

1
Q

3 Main Functions of the Lymphatic System

A
  1. Drains excess interstitial fluid (fluid that surrounds cell)
  2. Transports dietary lipids (fats)
  3. Carries out immune response

Q

Lymph consists of?

A
  • interstitial fluid leaked out of capillaries

- fats absorbed from digestive system (this makes it turn white-ish)

Q

Flow of Lymph through Lymphatic Vessels

A
  1. Lymphatic Capillaries lacteals (lymphatic capillaries in small intestine)
  2. Lymphatic collecting vessels (has valves and lymph nodes)
  3. Lymphatic trunks (has valves and lymph nodes)
  4. Ducts
    a. right lymphatic duct

Q

Flow of Lymph through Lymphatic Vessels; Ducts: Right Lymphatic Duct

A

drains lymph from specific parts of the body, any lymph coming from the upper right part of the body
- lymph enters at the junction between the right subclavian vein and the right internal jugular vein

Q

Flow of Lymph through Lymphatic Vessels; Ducts: Thoracic Duct

A

drains from the entire left side of body + everything below the diaphragm
-drop lymph at the junction between 2 veins: left subclavian vein and left internal jugular vein

Q

“Pumps” of Lymphatic System

A
  1. Muscular pump
  2. Respiratory pump
    - They work with valves so the lymph keeps moving to the heart

Q

Muscular Pump

A

consists of skeletal muscle

-contracting muscle squeezing on lymph vessel (generate pressure + valves open up)

Q

Cells Present In Lymphatic Tissue

A
  1. Lymphocytes- B cells, T cells
  2. Macrophages- develop from monocytes, Phagocytes
  3. Dendritic cells- phagocytes (engulf foreign cells (damaged cells))
  4. Reticular cells- make reticular fibers, which are the housing from which immune cells work out of)

Q

MALT

A

mucosa-associated lymphatic tissue

  • lines open body cavity, where microorganisms can come in
  • helps get rid of microorganisms
    1. Peyer’s patches- Ileum (last part of small intestine)
    2. Tonsils
  • 1 pharyngeal (adenoids)
  • 2 palatine (on the sides)
  • 2 lingual (back of tongue)
    3. Appendix- MALT in large intestine
  • MALT in respiratory, digestive, urinary, and reproductive tracts
17
Q

Different types of MALT

A
  1. Peyer’s patches- Ileum (last part of small intestine)
  2. Tonsils
    - 1 pharyngeal (adenoids)
    - 2 palatine (on the sides)
    - 2 lingual (back on tongue)
  3. Appendix- MALT in large intestine
