Chapter 26 Fluid Balance Vocabulary Flashcards
Intracellular Fluid (ICF)
fluid inside cells
-2/3 of total fluids
Extracellular Fluid (ECF)
fluid outside cells
-1/3 of total fluids
Plasma
fluid component of blood
Interstitial Fluid (IF)
fluid in spaces between tissue cells; also includes lymph, cerebrospinal fluid, serous fluid, synovial fluid, and secretions of digestive system
Electrolytes
compounds that form ions in solution
ex: salts (NaCl –> Na+ + Cl-) , acids + bases (HCl–> H+ + Cl-), most proteins (NaOH–> Na+ +OH-)
Nonelectrolytes
compounds that do not dissociate in solution
ex: Glucose, Lipids, Creatinine, Urea
Osmolarity
of solute particles dissolved in 1 liter of water (a measure of a solutions ability to cause osmosis)
pH
a measure of the H+ ion concentration of a solution
Acid
substance that release H+ ions into solution
Base
substance that removes H+ ions from solution
Buffer
weak acids or weak bases that help minimize changes in pH
