CSW2 renal replacement therapy Flashcards
What are the 3 main things that the kidneys do?
Toxin removal
Fluid removal
Hormone production
How is GFR best measured?
Creatinine
What are the stages of kidney failure? What % kidney function is there in each one
stage 1= 90-100% stage 2= 89-60% stage 3a= 59-45% stage 3b= 44-30% stage 4= 29-15% stage 5= less than 15%
How many stages of kidney failure are there? Name them
1, 2, 3a, 3b, 4, 5
What are the 4 key methods of renal replacement?
Transplant
Conservative care
Haemodialysis
Peritoneal dialysis
What is the most common renal replacement therapy in the UK?
Kidney transplant
What is prognosis for someone on renal replacement therapy? What is the reason for this
Quite poor- worse than a lot of cancers
Gets worse as you get older
Reason is cardiovascular disease
What is the most effective for of renal replacement therapy
Transplantation
What is eligible for renal transplane?
GFR <15 ml/min
GFR >15 ml/min and likely to need rrt in less than 6 months
In who is kidney transplant contrainidicated?
untreated malignancy
active infection
untreated HIV or AIDs
life expectancy under 2 years
Is pre emptive or post dialysis transplant better?
Pre emptive
Is live or deceased kidney donation better?
Live
Describe peritoneal dialysis
Peritoneum is used as the dialysis membrane
Fluid is drained then inserted
What are the 2 types of peritoneal dialysis
CAPD
Automated peritoneal dialysis
What are some adv and disadv of peritoneal dialysis
adv= easy to travel, low tech, flexible disadv= needs to be continuous therapy, peritonitis risk, there my be membrane failure
