Chapter 95 Liver and Biliary System Flashcards
What is the coronary ligament of the liver
Coronary ligament attaches the liver to the diaphragm and is a continuation of the hepatic peritoneal covering, which is present over the entire surface of the organ except for the region of the porta hepatis.
Blood supply of the liver and oxygen provided
Hepatic artery 20% of blood volume
Hepatic artery provides 50% of oxygen supply
Portal Vein 80% of blood volume and other 50%
Pringle maneuver: Which vessels are ligated and for how long
10-15 minutes
Hepatic artery, portal vein, common bile duct
Describe pancreatic duct in dogs
Common bile duct enters duodenum at the major duodenal papilla NEXT to the pancreatic duct *
Accessory pancreatic duct (main duct in dogs) is the larger pancreatic excretory duct and enters at the minor duodenal papilla
Describe the pancreatic duct in cats
Common bile duct and pancreatic duct (main duct in cats) conjoin before entry into the duodenum at the major papilla *
Only 20% of cats have accessory pancreatic duct
Any disease that affects major duodenal papilla has potential to cause pancreatic exocrine insufficiency
What is produced in the liver
Liver’s responsible for 20% of total body protein production – albumin, alpha- beta- and some gamma-globulins.
Liver synthesizes cholesterol from chylomicrons and lipoproteins
Anticoagulants and fibrinolytic agents (plasminogen, antithrombin III, alpha 2 macroglobulin, and alpha2plasmin all produced in the liver
How does liver metabolize carbohydrates and maintain plasma glucose concentrations
gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis
