Chapter 3 Stem cells and Regenerative Medicine Flashcards
Where are Mesenchymal stem cells commonly found
Bone, fat, synovium, muscle, and teeth
What are mesenchymal cells classified as?
A. Totipotent
B. Multipotent
C. Pluripotent
Name two more types
B. Multipotent. So are most adult stem cells and perinatal stem cells
What are totipotent cells?
Potential to differentiate into cells from each germ layer lineage (ecto, endo, and mesoderm and extraembryonic tissues like trophectoderm)
Examples of totipotent cells
Fertilized zygote and very early progeny
What are pluripotent cells
Ability to differentiate into cells from more than one germ layer but not extraembryonic tissues
What are examples of pluripotent cells
Embryonic stem cells and induced pluripotent stem cells
What are Multipotent cells
Limited to differentiation based on the germ layer it came from
