Chapter 81 Burns Flashcards
How to calculate surface area for burns
Wallaces rule of 9s.
Head and neck: 9%
Each forelimb: 9%
Each hindlimb: 18%
Dorsal half: 18%
Ventral half: 18%
What is the inflammatory response to burns
Response characterized by vasodilation, increased capillary permeability, edema, and influx of inflammatory cells.
What is responsible for marked vasodilation within a burn wound and what is its MOA
Nitric oxide: direct effects on vascular smooth muscle and indirectly by stimulation of release of other vasodilatory cytokines (i.e. substance P)
Why do burn wounds heal slower than other wounds
Lower concentrations of cytokines (fibroblast growth factor-2) and no endothelial chemotactic or proliferative activity is seen.
