Chapter 87 Soft Tissues of the Oral Cavity Flashcards
Describe the sublingual and mandibular salivary duct
Mandibular duct courses under the mucosal sublingual folds and open at the sublingual caruncle. Sublingual duct courses alongside the mandibular and exits caudal to the mandibular duct at the sublingual caruncle
Name the gustatory and non-gustatory papillae
Gustatory papillae of the tongue:
i. Fungiform
ii. Vallate
iii. Foliate
Non-gustatory papilla of the tongue:
i. Filiform
ii. Conical – grooming – especially cats
Which nerves are involved in swallowing
CN V (trigeminal), VII (facial), IX (glossopharyngeal), X (vagus), XII (hypoglossal)
What are the 3 phases and subphases of swallowing
Oropharyngeal (oral, pharyngeal, and pharyngoesophageal)
Esophageal
Gastroesophageal
Describe the 3 subphases of the oropharyngeal phase of swallowing and which nerves are involved
Oral: formation of food bolus - voluntary
CN V, VII, XII
Pharyngeal: transport food through pharynx - involuntary
Swallowing center
CN IX and X
Pharyngoesophageal: passage of food from pharynx through cricopharyngeal sphincter into the esophagus - involuntary
CN IX and X
Which nerve innervate the extrinsic and intrinsic tongue muscles
Hypoglossal (XII) nerve
Which nerve innervates the rostral 2/3 of the lingual mucosa
Lingual nerve from the mandibular branch of the trigeminal (CN V) nerve
Which nerve provides motor innervation to the rostral 2/3 of the tongue
Hypoglossal nerve XII
Which nerve branch innervates the caudal 1/3 of the tongue
Lingual branch of Glossopharyngeal nerve (IX)
Which nerve provides sensory innervation to the rostral 2/3 of the tongue?
Lingual nerve from the mandibular n., facial nerve
