Chapter 5 Part 1 Flashcards
What is a Vertebrae?
Has a Backbone
Animals that have only the Cranium are…
not true vertebrates
Vertebrates also have
Neural Crest Cells, Internal Organs, Endoskeleton
Neural crest cells- embryonic stem cells forms…
sensory organs, parts of cranium, teeth, etc
Internal organs-
liver, kidneys, endocrine glands, heart and closed circ. systm.
Endoskeleton (fish)-
Made of cartilage or bone; provides movement
Vertebrates are divided into 2 categories:
Superclass Agnatha and Gnathostomata
Agnathan examples are
hagfish and lampreys
Gnathostomata examples are
cartilaginous/bony fish, tetrapods
Superclass Agnathan-
absence of hinged jaw/paired appendages; sucker like mouth reinforced with cartilage
Superclass Gnathostomata-
Prescence of hinged jaw and paired appendages
Most diverse and numerous group of vertebrates-
Gnathostomata
Class Chondrichthyes have 2 groups
Elasmobranchs-sharks, ray
Holocephalans-ratfishes
Characteristics of Class Chondrichthyes
cartilaginous endoskeleton
carnivores/scavengers
no swim bladder/gill cover
placoid scales
Superclass Osteichthyes have
swim bladder/gill cover, adapt to life in water
