Chapter 10 Part 2 Flashcards
Fiber colors have different
physiological properties
Red (dark)-
Highly vascular/rich in myoglobin; stores O2
White (light)-
Less vascular/low myoglobin; contract rapidly/fatigue quicker
Tonic/Twitch can sort by muscle ability to establish and
sustain generated forces
(5) Tonic fibers:
Slow
contracting/produce low force
Sustains contrt. for long time
Postural support
Common in amph./rept.
Twitch fibers:
Fast contrct., Rapid movem., Found in all verts.,2 Types:slow/fast
Slow twitch fibers(red) take longer to reach
max force than fast twitch fibers (white)
Differ in their resistance to fatigue during
sustained exercise
Performance of a musc. depends on how it is attached to the bones of the
lever system
Distal movem.-
strong movem, short sweeps
Proximal attachment-
fast movem., longer sweeps
Synergists-musc. that act together to produce
motion in same general direction; biceps brachii/brachialis
Antagonists-musc. that produce
opposing motions; biceps/triceps brachii
Origin-
fixed point of attachment
Insertion-
moveable point of attachment
