What were the four cash crops that the South’s economy was based on?
tobacco, rice, sugarcane, and cotton
This was introduced by Eli Whitney that helped comb seeds out of cotton.

- forced workers to work from sunrise to sunset
- organized into gangs with drivers in charge to do this work
- had very intense punishment

What did slaves do to cope with their lives in slavery?
They developed a culture with a sense of unity, pride, and support. This included songs to help pass the day and a religion with a blend of African folklore and Christianity.
What is passive resistance?
resisting against boss or master without use of violence.
What are some examples of passive resistance?
- staged work slowdowns
- refusal of hard work
- runaway
What is aggressive resistance?
resistance against boss or master with usage of violence
What are examples of aggressive resistance?
- damaging tools
- setting fire to houses and barns
- some revolts
This person was a free man in South Carolina that wanted to arm slaves to revolt against their masters. Authorities found out about this before his plan was under way, and he was tried, convicted, and hung.
Denmark Vesey
This person was an enslaved man that believed God chose him to revolt against white people because of slavery. He, along with some assistance, killed over 50 white men, women, and children. He was caught, tried, convicted, and eventually executed.
Nat Turner
These were acts that restricted rights of slaves, and specified what they couldn’t do rather than what they could do.

What are some examples of Slave Codes?
- can’t own property
- can’t leave area without permission
- can’t own firearms
- can’t testify in court against a white person
- can’t read or write
