chapter 1 lesson 5 part 1 Flashcards
This is the belief that a country had to accumulate gold and silver to be wealthy and powerful.
Mercantilism
What were the benefits of mercantilism for the colonies?
It was a reliable market for raw materials, and it offered suppliers of manufactured goods.
What were the drawbacks of mercantilism?
It prevented the colonies from selling to other nations, and if the goods weren’t wanted, there was no profit made. This kept them from making money to buy what was needed.
What were the Navigation Acts?
- Certain items were listed that could only be sold to England.
- All goods were required to be imported or exported from the colonies to be carried on English ships.
- 3/4 of every ship crew had to be English.
- Everything was required to be imported to the colonies to go through England and the colonies were required to pay the English taxes. This was known as the Staple Act.
What happened when the colonists refused to follow the Navigation Acts?
England appointed customs inspectors.
What did King Charles II do when he found out the colonists weren’t following the Navigation Acts, especially Massachusetts?
He took away Massachusetts’ charter and made them into a royal colony. This started the Dominion of New England.
This was when Massachusetts, Plymouth, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Jersey were merged together due to ignorance of the Navigation Acts. This was governed by the governor-general, Sir Edmund Andros.
Dominion of New England
What was Edmund Andros appointed to do specifically?
to uphold the Navigation Acts in the Dominion of NE.
What all did Edmund Andros do the the colonists? (POSSIBLE ESSAY QUESTION)
- declared all land and deeds under Mass. charter worthless
- forced citizens to pay annual tax
- enforced Navigation Acts, rigorously
- strengthened Anglican Church by declaring any other marriage aside from Anglican marriage illegal and demanding Puritan meeting halls be available for Anglican worship every other Sunday
- declared no one to teach without permission
Why were people upset with King James II in England?
He declared himself the “Divine Ruler” and openly practiced Catholicism.
This was when the Parliament invited Mary, James II’s daughter, to take over the throne after an overthrow. Parliament was to convince James to step down, and let the joint-sovereignty of Mary, and her husband, William, rule instead. Considered to be glorious since no blood was shed.
Glorious Revolution
What changed after William and Mary took control?
The Dominion of NE was dissolved, Mass., Plymouth, and Maine were made into royal colonies, property was required to vote rather than church, and Anglican worship was to be tolerated.
What was the average woman’s life like in the colonies?
They had many responsibilities and were seen as less than men.
What could a married woman not do?
- own property
- make a contract
- be a part of a lawsuit
- make a will
- have rights to children
What rights did a single woman/widow have?
- own and manage property
- file lawsuits
- run businesses
