Describe the First Battle of Bull Run.
First major battle of the Civil War, had picnickers (who weren’t supposed to be there), and could’ve been a complete victory for the South
What was the draft/conscription?
Forcing people to participate in the war.
Who qualified for the draft?
White men ages 18-35 years old
What was a bounty?
It was a cash payment given as a bonus to any man who volunteered to serve in the military.
What is bounty jumping?
People who would serve only to collect a bounty
Describe what happened at New Orleans.
David Farragut bombarded Confederate ports and was able to capture New Orleans
Describe what happened in the clash of the ironclad ships.
Monitor (U) v. Merrimack (C) - Both the Confederates and the Union had to try to deal the most damage to the other ship. The Union won.
Describe what happened in the War in the West.
The Union captured all of Kentucky and most of Tennessee.
Describe what happened in the Seven Days Battle.
McClellan v. Lee - Robert E. Lee was able to cause enough damage for James McClellan to retreat
Describe what happened in the Second Battle of Bull Run.
Pope & McClellan v. Jackson & Lee - Lee and Jackson demonstrated strong teamwork and destroyed Union troops
Describe what happened at the Battle of Antietam.
McClellan v. Lee - Bloodiest one day battle and changed the course of the war
What did the Emancipation Proclamation say?
All slaves in Southern states are free. this didn’t apply to border states.
