Why did Winfield Scott want Robert E. Lee to command the Union troops?
Lee was considered the best senior officer in US Army
Why did Robert E. Lee decide to support the confederacy?
He didn’t want to fight against his home state?
Why did the South have such a strong military tradition? (71S)

Why did the North have such a strong navy tradition? (3HM)
- ¾ of Navy officers were from the North
- Had large pool of trained sailors
- Most warships and all but one shipyard was under Union control
What were the Union advantages?
More people, more miles of railroad, factories, better navy, and more money
What advantages did the Confederates have?
Better trained officers and they were fighting on familiar ground
What was the Legal Tender Act?
Created a national currency and issuing greenbacks that were backed up by gold
What was wrong with the South printing their own money?
It wasn’t backed up with gold and it caused rapid inflation
Who were the War Democrats?
They opposed ending slavery, but supported the war
Who were the Copperheads?
Northern Democrats who opposed the war
What is habeas corpus?
the right of a person to hear charges against him/her, leads to right to a trial
Why would Europe ever consider helping the South?
they produced cotton
What did Britain say the South would have to do before they would talk about helping them?
They would have to have a major victory first.
Describe what happened in the Trent Affair.
James Mason and John Slidell were sent by the South aboard the Trent to be permanent ministers to Britain and Spain. However, the Union ship San Jacinto, intercepted this ship and captured Mason and Slidell.
