What was the South’s economy based on and why?
Agriculture due to good soil and weather.
The main crops of the South included…
tobacco, rice, indigo
This is a large commercial estate where several workers lived on the land and cultivated crops for landowners.
Plantation
This is a person that worked for 4-7 yrs. in exchange for free passage. They were to be provided with food, clothing, and shelter, and were able to produce 5 times the price of their contracts in the first year alone.

Why did Africans do so well cultivating rice?
West Africans have been cultivating rice for years prior to being imported to the colonies.
This person discovered that indigo grew well on high ground and sandy soil.

These were people that were small farmers living in “the backcountry.” They also practiced subsistence farming, which was growing enough to only feed your family.

What were the levels of social division in the South from highest to lowest?

Bacon’s Rebellion
Describe Bacon’s Rebellion. (POSSIBLE ESSAY QUESTION)
Governor Sir William Berkeley restricted voting to people who owned property. Most land that was available belonged to the Natives. Led by Nathaniel Bacon (NATHANIEL B?????) led a dispute with natives to take some land for the backcountry gentry, but this soon turned into the biggest effort yet to overthrow a government. Although this effort frightened William Berkeley, this rebellion died out because Bacon suddenly died whilst on the toilet.
What were the steps from an average African citizen to being a slave in the colonies?
- You were rounded up by an African Chieftan from a rival tribe.
- You were placed in coffles, which were lines secured with ropes or chains.
- You were crammed onto a ship and put on a route on the Middle Passage.
- You were sold to the highest bidder an an auction.
How were many of the early slaves and what changed?
Early slaves were treated like indentured servants and even had the opportunity to obtain freedom and own land by converting to Christianity. However, competition led to a harsh change. Slave codes were established, which never recognized rights the slaves had and more so rights they didn’t have.
