Chapter 5 5.1 Flashcards
Learning Definition
The modification of preexisting behavior and understanding
Adaptation
The ability of adjust to new information and experiences
Habituation - non-associative learning
The gradual warning of a behavioral response to a weak or predate stimulus that is presented repeatedly.
Dishabituation
The phenomenon whereby the introduction of a different and salient stimulus will restore that original responding to the habituated stimulus.
Sensitization
The process of becoming highly sensitive to specific events or situations.
Solomon’s opponent process theory
A theory of emotional and motivation states that is proposed by psychologist Richard and Solomon.
Classical conditioning the world - visual capture
Learning that occurs when a neutral stimulus becomes associates with stimulus that naturally produces a behavior.
Define & Pavlov
A theory that states that all behaviors can be learned through a process known as conditioning.
Acquisition
The moment when a response is established based on conditioning
Reflexive
The examination of one’s own beliefs, judgements, and practices during the research process and how these may have influenced the research.
Unconditioned Stimulus
A stimulus that triggers a response without prior conditioning
Unconditioned Response
An unlearned reaction to an unconditioned stimulus
NS
Neutral stimulus
Conditioned Stimulus
A previously neutral stimulus that now triggers a conditioned response.
Conditioned Response
An automatic response established by training
Extinction & spontaneous recovery
Extinction is the gradual disappearance of a conditioned response. Spontaneous recovery is the temporary reappearance of a conditioned response following a rest period after extinction.
Generalization & discrimination
Generalization is a process in which a conditioned response is triggered by stimuli similar to the original conditioned stimulus. Discrimination is a process through which a conditioned response is triggered by some stimuli but not others.
Timing, predictability
The likelihood at which an event is going to occur.
Signal Strength, attention
The detection of a stimulus depends on both the intensity of the stimulus and the physical psychology state of the individual.
Preparedness, high order conditioning
When a neutral stimulus becomes linked to a conditioned stimulus. Preparedness is a concept that proposed that organisms innately form associations between some stimuli and response.
High order conditioning
A process through which a conditioned stimulus comes to signal another conditioned stimulus that is already associated with an unconditioned stimulus.
Applications
The study and ability to solve problems within human behavior such as health issues, workplace issues, or education.
