Hypnosis
A phenomenon that is brought on by special techniques and it characterized by varying degrees of responsiveness to suggestions for changes in a person’s behavior and experiences.
Hypnotic Susceptibility
The degrees to which a person responds to hypnotic suggestions.
Attention focus, ignore outside stimuli.
Fantasize, quick processors, suggestible.
Hypnotic Suggestions
If it is delivered in the context of hypnosis.
Age regression
5 effects - reduced pain, focus on hypnotist, fantasize, role taking, less reality.
State theories
Theories proposing that hypnosis creates an altered state of consciousness.
Nonstate theories
Theories, such as role theory, proposing that hypnosis does not create an altered state of consciousness.
Role Theory
The cultural norms regarding psychological and interactional aspects of members of society.
Dissociative Theory
A mental process where a person disconnects from their thoughts, feelings, memories or sense identity.
psychopharmacology - agonists vs. antagonists
Antagonists are chemicals that mimic a neurotransmitter at the receptor site and strengthen its affects
Antagonist blocks or impedes the normal activity of a neurotransmitter at the receptor.
Psychoactive drugs
Substances that when taken in or administered into one’s system, affects mental processes, perception, consciousness, cognitive or mood and emotions.
CNS depressants
alcohol, barbiturates, benz, GHB
CNS stimulating
Ampheramines, cocaine, caffeine, nitotine.
Halluciogenic
LSD, Ketamine, marijuana
