Chapter 2 2.1 Flashcards
The Nervous System
Neurons are the cells. The NS complex set of cells whose function is to allow an organism to gain information about what is going on inside and outside the body and to respond appropriately.
Dendrites
Neuron fibers receive signals from the atoms of other neurons and carry those signals to the cell body.
Cell body
DNA & mitochondira O2, glucose, and energy
Action Potential
An abrupt wave of electrochemical changes traveling down an axon when a neuron becomes depolarized.
Refractory Period
A short rest period between action potentials.
Axons
Fibers that carry signals from the body of a neuron out to where communication occurs with other neurons.
Myelin Sheath
An insulating layer, or sheath, forms around nerves in the brain and spinal cord.
Glial cells - Schwann cells & astrocytes
Cell in the nervous system hold neurons and helps them communicate with one another.
Terminal Boutons - nodes of Ranvier
The terminal inflated portion of the axon contains the specialized apparatus necessary to release neurotransmitters.
Synapse - Synaptic cleft
The tiny gaps between neurons across which they communicate.
Neurotransmitters
Chemicals that assist in the transfer of signals from one neuron to another.
