The Gods offered a night bright with stars and quiet with a calm sea, as if to expose the guilt of the crime. The ship had not progressed far, when Agrippina with two of her friends accompanying, one of whom Crepereius Gallus was standing not far from the rudder,

Acerronia lying down over her feet while she was reclining, was mentioning the regret of the son and the recovered influence of the mother with joy, when with the signal having been given, the canopy over the spot, heavy with much lead, fell with ruin; Crepereius was crushed and killed immediately. Agrippina and Acerronia were protected by the projected walls of the couch which were by chance too strong to yield to the lead.

And the breaking up of the vessel did not follow because with everyone confused and and the majority ignorant of the plot were impeding those in the know. Agrippina, silent, and therefore the less recognised (however received a wound to the shoulder) by swimming then meeting small boats, she sailed to the Lucrine Lake and was brought into her villa.
