Question 1

Sententiae Cassii ut nemo unus contra ire ausus est, ita dissonae voces respondebant numerum aut aetatem aut sexum ac plurimorum indubiam innocentiam miserantium: praevaluit tamen pars, quae supplicium decernebat.

Just as no one dared to oppose Cassius’ view, in the same way, confused voices were responding, of those pitying the number, age or sex and the indubitable innocence of the majority: however, the party which voted for punishment prevailed.

Cingonius Varro had given a considered opinion that also the freedmen who had been under the same roof should be deported from Italy. This was prohibited by the emperor so that the ancient custom which pity had not reduced, was not tightened thought cruelty.
