Chapter 35 Flashcards
Boudicca curru filias prae se vehens, ut quamque nationem accesserat, solitum quidem Britannis feminarum ductu bellare testabatur,
Boudica, carrying her daughters with her in her chariot, when she had approached each tribe she was bearing witness that it was indeed common for the Britons to make war under the leadership of women,
but then not as a woman, sprung from kingship and wealth by such great ancestors but as one of the people to avenge, the loss of freedom, a body worn out by lashes of the whip and violated modesty of her daughters.
She said that the desires of the Romans had proceeded to such a point that they did not leave our bodies, not even our old age or our virginity unpolluted.
However, the gods of just vengeance are here: a legion has fallen which dared battle: the rest are hidden in camp or or look around for flight.
They will not even endure the shouts and the din of so many thousands, still less the attacks and fighting hands:
if they weighed up the forces of armed men, they weighed the reasons of the war with them, it was necessary at conquer or to fall in this battle line. That was a woman’s destiny: men would live and be slaves.
