At about the same time the horrible slaughter arose from a trivial beginning amongst settlers of Nucena and Pompeii at a gladiatorial spectacle, which Livineius Regulus whom I have reported was banished from the senate, was putting on.
quippe oppidana lascivia in vicem incessente[s] probra, dein saxa, postremo ferrum sumpsere, validiore Pompeianorum plebe, apud quos spectaculum edebatur.
For in fact with the unruly behaviour of typical town folk, attacking each other in turn they took up insults, then rocks, and finally sword, with the people of the Pompeiians being stronger among whom the spectacle was being put on.

And again the matter was referred to the senators, the Pompeiians were forbidden from meeting publically in this way for ten years, and the clubs which they had established against the laws were broken down; Livineius and the others who had provoked this mutiny were punished by exile.
