Chapter 23 Part 4 Flashcards
alkaline solution produced by the liver and important for the emulsification of lipids
Bile
What is bile made of?
water, bile salts, bile pigments, phospholipids (such as lecithin), electrolytes, cholesterol, and triglycerides
intestinal brush-border enzyme that activates trypsinogen to trypsin
Enteropeptidase
serves to buffer the acidic gastric juice in chyme, inactivate pepsin from the stomach, and create an optimal environment for the activity of pH-sensitive digestive enzymes in the small intestine
Sodium bicarbonate
What is pancreatic juice made of?
made of mostly water along with some salts, sodium bicarbonate, and several digestive enzymes
vein that supplies deoxygenated nutrient-rich blood to the liver
Hepatic portal vein
artery that supplies oxygenated blood to the liver
Hepatic artery
Where and in what form are carbohydrates absorbed?
Monosaccarides in small intestine
Where and in what form are proteins absorbed?
Mostly duodenum and jejunum and small intestine; amino acids
Where are lipids absorbed?
Small intestine
