Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p255

What is the danger when misjudging heights using straight ladders?

A

If you misjudge and have too much ladder the angle will be very low. Low angles tend kick out the feet of ladders.

If you misjudge and there is not enough ladder the angle will be too tight against the wall which can cause the ladder to pull away from the structure as you ascend.

Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p258

If you have yet to do a size up of the side of the building you need to ladder, what is the most appropriate ladder choice?

A

the appropriate extension ladder, due to a more forgiving nature that straight ladders.

Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p259-261

What are three methods for single FFers portable ladder and tool carries?

A

Low Shoulder carry- perhaps the most common carry. FFer rest beam of ladder on shoulder, place one arm through the rungs, and grasp the rung with one hand. Tools carried in opposite hand.

High shoulder carry- lowest beam sets on shoulder, to control the ladder both hands will need to grasp rungs. Less advantageous than low shoulder carry.

Ladder Drag- place tools on ladder and go, can also be used to carry multiple ladders (straight w/ roof hooks and extension work best)

Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p261

What are the two methods of dragging multiple ladders?

A
  1. hooking roof ladder on top of extension.

2. placing extension on roof ladder, where hooks of the roof ladder capture the extension ladder

Q

Order of ladder placement?

A
  1. Fire floor, think about best placement
  2. Floor above the fire, avoid directly above (1st if fire on first floor)
  3. Top floor
  4. All floors between
  5. To the roof (flat roof: #4, and all floors is #5)

corners can be covered by one ladder, avoid over entry doors

Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p265

From where are fires in peaked roof residential dwellings best extinguished?

A

from inside and below

18
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p265

What are the two one man ladder raises?

A

Method one: dip and dive- takes portable ladder right from the shoulder carry, in one movement to the building.

Method two: beam side- place ladder perpendicular to building, member the lifts, gets under and pushes and slides along the beams, moving ladder to vertical position.

19
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p266

Dip and dive

A

Fly out, shoulder carry, OHO

  • flatten ladder out, fly up, firmly grab on rung
  • in one fluid motion, dip butt down and drive ladder into where the grounding building meet, push up ladder with rung against the building.
  • secure the ladder to building, pull base out a bit
  • pull halyard to desired height
  • roll ladder to position
20
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p267

Beam slide

A
  • place ladder on ground fly up, butt at base of building
  • lift tip of ladder move to eye height, use legs
  • duck under ladder, holding rails, push ladder vertical.
  • secure ladder with knee against building, pull out base
  • pull halyard
  • roll ladder into position
21
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p268

Rule of thumb for ladder climbing angle

A
  1. Stand on lowest rung put arms straight out in front, if they touch
  2. A quarter of the working length, from base of structure. So 24’ extension ladder set to 20 feet so five feet away from building. (two guesses = bad method)
22
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p268

What is the proper climbing angle?

A

70 degrees

23
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p268

When footing ladders where is it recommended to stand?

A

stand outside the ladder (at ladder base), facing building and the ladder. Use Boxer’s Stance place one foot on the bottom rung and hands on beam of the ladder

24
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p270

How does the author recommend climbing the ladder?
Carry tools?

A

feet slightly out to either side of the rungs, keep hands on beams…bad weather feet further out to outside and deeper in rungs.

Tools carried, hook one on rungs ahead, other stay in hand in beam slide up with hand. Leave one hand free.

25
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p270

When drilling (training) on ladders what should be worn at minimum?

A

Helmets and gloves in place

26
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p270

How often should ladders be inspected?

A

Visually on a monthly basis and after each use.

27
Q

Chapter 22 Ladders p271

Tips out or in, why?

A

With tip in/butt out, ladder comes out butt first, leads you to your objective, most of the time this is best practice.

In tight back yards, going butt first would require us to spin the ladder so butt would face rear of building. If we store butt first/tip out then we are already in position for back yard.
